RCRD Boot Camp 2025

Our family is growing!

RCRD kicked off the 2025 season with a bang at roller derby Boot Camp! The purpose of this annual three-day workshop is to recruit and train new members to the RCRD family. Our booties picked up the basics with lightning speed, exceeding all expectations. From derby stance to plow stops, our new “freshies” are well on their way to becoming valuable members of our team!

Led by Glamazon and J. Beyl, our R&R (Recruitment & Retention) and Training Committees teamed up to design and run the show this year. Judging by feedback so far, it was a huge success! In fact, this past week saw the largest group of recruits RCRD has ever had at one time. What’s more, we were not only joined by future skaters, but officials and juniors’ coaches as well.

With all our returning skaters helping teach skills in different ways, we accomplished more in three short days than we could ever have dreamed of. However, we couldn’t have done it without every single committee, official, and vet—and most importantly, our new recruits!

Building new skills with FUN-damentals

Monday, we worked on basic skating skills, wrapping up with a game of “Hot Dog” (similar to freeze tag, but actually a sneaky way to make us do burpees):

Skaters rushing in to "bun" help teammates who have been tagged (and thus, turned into "hot dogs")

After reviewing what we learned the first night, we ended Tuesday’s session with surf rock and an old classic, Wipeout, practicing knee taps and slides:

Getting into the Nitty-Gritty

Thursday night’s jam-packed schedule filled in all the gaps. Head officials Zero Factorial and Identity Crisis gave an overview of derby rules and explained how to join the officiating team. After all, since it takes at least 18 volunteers to fully staff the track, becoming an official is an excellent way to participate!

Afterwards, we ran through obstacle courses to cement the basics:

Next, vets put on a mini-scrimmage to demonstrate bout structure:

Finally, freshies got a taste of gameplay with “sock derby” (aka “land derby”):
